RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the Lost and Found policy UTA.06.02, which also rescinds Corporate Policy 1.1.26, and authorize the Executive Director to sign and implement the new policy.
BACKGROUND:
In an effort to update and improve the policy and procedures for handling found items on the UTA system and facilities, a task team, which included representation from Public Safety, Operations, Customer Service as well as an overview from a member of the UTA Audit department and legal support reviewed current and best practices for lost items. The new policy will guide the process for improved tracking to reunite items with their owners.
DISCUSSION:
Major changes of the Lost and Found Policy include: • Extending the holding time for items with a value of $250 or higher and all electronics from 30 days to 90 days. • Elimination of found items being tagged by employees, in case the owners never made a claim. • Immediate reporting of a found item to UTA control centers • Defining donation process to charitable organizations • Video surveillance of storage areas • Tracking the full cycle of the process
