AGENDA ITEM TYPE:
Other Approval

RECOMMENDATION:
Approve international work travel from February 1 - 14, 2026 in Milan and Cortina, Italy to join the Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 Olympic Organizing Committee’s (SLC-UT2034) Observation Team’s Program for the 2026 Winter Olympics. SLC-UT2034 has invited UTA employees Jay Fox (Executive Director) and Andrés Colman (Chief Operations Officer) to participate.

BACKGROUND:
Board Policy 2.1 Financial Management, section J ‘Travel’ indicates that “The Board of Trustees will approve work-related international travel for the Authority’s employees in a public meeting.”

DISCUSSION:
In advance of the Salt Lake City-Utah 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, SLC-UT2034 has extended an invitation to UTA to participate in observing operations and logistics for the Olympic Games in Italy in February 2026. These games provide SLC-UT2034 and UTA with an opportunity to learn from the host’s management of the Games’ environment, including transportation operations. Participating in the Observer Program will help inform UTA’s strategies/plans for 2034.

ALTERNATIVES:
Not attend

FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no registration fee for the Observer Program. Travel is approximately $11,100 per attendee (including airfare, hotel accommodations, and per diem).
These costs are programmed in the 2026 approved budget under Travel and Training in each employee’s respective department budgets.
