R2022-03-05 - Resolution Approving Rail Station Names for TRAX 600 South Station and FrontRunner Vineyard Station
end

AGENDA ITEM TYPE:
Resolution

RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of Trustees approve resolution R2022-03-05 as presented by staff.

BACKGROUND:
UTA has two new rail stations under construction, including a new TRAX station in Salt Lake City between 600 and 700 South, and a new FrontRunner station in the city of Vineyard in Utah County. Both stations are scheduled to open for service in spring 2022.
The Board of Trustees policy 3.1 - Advertising & Naming - requires board approval of station names and provides the following guidance to staff in developing proposed station names:
• The Authority will select primary station names that assist customers in navigating its transit system, such as names that incorporate geographical coordinates.
• The Authority will select secondary station names that relate to geographical landmarks, public activities, or names that have historical or cultural significance to the immediate area in which the station is located.
• The Authority will not name any stations, facilities, or service brands after any individual, either living or deceased.
In addition, staff have taken efforts in recent years to establish more consistent naming conventions for bus and rail routes as well as station names, in an effort to provide more clarity and simplicity for riders.

DISCUSSION:
In accordance with the Board of Trustees policy and efforts to be consistent throughout the system, staff is proposing the following names for the two new stations:
• New FrontRunner station: “Vineyard Station.” This is consistent with the naming of all other FrontRunner stations, which reference the city in which the station is located. No secondary names have been applied to FrontRunner stations to date.
• New TRAX station: “600 South Station.” This is consistent with recent efforts to name TRAX stations according to the nearest cross street. No secondary name is being proposed at this time.

ALTERNATIVES:
Advise staff to go back and consider alternative station names.

FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
