BACKGROUND:

As federally required, UTA conducted an on-board survey of our customers to understand rider origins and destinations for calibration of the regional travel demand model. The survey targeted customers across the system, traveling during peak and off-peak periods, including weekends. The survey was designed to produce a statistically valid sample of all UTA bus and rail routes, and on-demand service, identifying minorities and low-income riders and fare payment types.

DISCUSSION:

Surveys were administered by UTA’s contract consultant team on all transit modes (excluding Paratransit and Vanpool) from February 2024 through April 2024. Interviewers surveyed transit riders using digital tablets enabled with real-time geocoding software. Under randomized selection, transit customers answered 33 questions regarding trip behavior and demographics.

The questions were formulated to obtain origin and destination data for travel patterns estimation, and demographic and fare data per federal requirements. The survey team exceeded the minimum target sample sizes, providing a robust sample of our system. The final report includes the project work plan, data analysis methodology, and key findings of rider and trips profiles.
